The work God requires

28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

John 6:28-29

Have you ever stopped to think about the work you do, and why you do it – whether it be a career, a part time job, a full time homemaker, or at school/uni? We can often get caught in the moment of a deadline, a problem with a team mate, or a child that wants all our attention, and we lose sight of the work that God requires – to believe in the one he has sent (and the work he did on the cross). But when we take a moment to reflect on the work God requires of us, it changes the way we view what is in front of us.

Gloria Furman in her book “Glimpses of Grace” writes

“When you can’t see how you can go on, or you notice that you have become obsessed or overwhelmed by your circumstances, cling to Jesus… Jesus died for you. You can trust him.” (p80)

How does the work God requires relate to or shape the earthly work you do? How does Gloria Furman’s encouragement help spur you on? How can you use where God has placed you to carry out the work he requires? Spend a few moments thinking through these questions.

Sit and meditate on God – listen to what he wants to say to you through this. Respond to him in prayer.
