Not Your Average Kids Bible Stories – A note for Parents

Hi Parents,

During the 24/25 school holidays, we will be working through a series called ‘Not Your Average Kids Bible Stories’. I’m sharing this here to let you know why we’ve chosen this series and what happening with it.

There are three purposes to the series.

The first is to teach on stories that kids are familiar with so that we can have some fun with the kids while they are in big church with the youth and adults. This is part of bigger goal that we have to make our Sunday morning services during the summer accessible for families with young kids when there isn’t a kid’s program on. To this end, in the morning services we will also have:

  • Gifts for the kids
  • Shorter sermons
  • A play area for pre-schoolers at the back of the auditorium
  • Kids doing the bible readings
  • More concrete object lessons with props

The second purpose of this series is to model to our whole church how we can talk about difficult and mature content with kids present. This is an important thing for parents, kids and youth leaders, and any of our people who interact with kids. We’ll be looking to address these passages at a PG13 level and encourage parents to have discussions with their kids afterwards.

The third purpose is to model how to read the bible carefully. The stories that we are looking at will be mostly familiar to us. We think we know them. However, when we read them carefully, there is a lot more than sometimes meets the eye. It’ll be a great opportunity for us to richly study God’s word together as a church family.

Our evening services will therefore be doing the same passages as the morning service, but we’ll dial it up a little beyond PG13 when the text takes us that way

If you have any questions about this, feel free to email me at jamessnare@livingchurch.org.au or catch me on a Sunday.
