Kids Church Curriculum Review Update

Earlier this year, at the term 3 Church Life dinner, we announced there would be a review of the current parallel curriculum model in kids church.

After taking on feedback from Parents, Leaders & Kids church graduates within our church, and children’s ministry workers in other contexts, it was my recommendation to the board that we move away from the parallel curriculum model and start using an off the shelf curriculum that helps kids establish a foundational understanding of Christ centred biblical theology.

At their October meeting the board endorsed this decision and approved my recommendation to begin using The Biggest Story Curriculum in Kids Church, in a 3 year cycle that would see kids cover the whole of the biblical narrative twice in their primary school years.

Kids Church will still begin each year doing the “Vision, Mission & Values” series in parallel with the adults, but moving forward, starting February 2025, we will be using The Biggest Story Curriculum.

If you have any questions about this decision, or the curriculum we’ve chosen, please feel free to chat to me on Sundays, or send an e-mail to kids@livingchurch.org.au.

For the eager beavers in our community wanting to get a head start on things the authors of The Biggest Story Curriculum have just release a FREE Advent Bible Reading Plan for families.  Each daily devotion for the month of December includes:

  • A suggested Bible reading incorporating passages from both the Old and New Testaments
  • The relevant chapter from The Biggest Story Bible Storybook
  • A short “Gospel Connection” section connecting the story to Jesus
  • A fun ornament children can cut out, colour, and hang on the Christmas tree
  • A QR code linking to a free animated video for the story

Help your kids understand and look forward to the advent of Jesus this year, and get a taste of what Kids Church will be like in the new year.
