Mark 10:42 – 44
42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.

We often refer to Christianity as being ‘countercultural.’ This means that the values of Christianity can often stand opposed to those set by the established society. While we often view this from a contemporary lens, clearing seeing how Christianity and the culture of our time stand in opposition, we often forget that Christianity has been countercultural since humanity first fell into sin.
Nothing makes this clearer than this passage. In verse 42 we see that it was common for men in leadership to purvey a sense of autocratic and domineering authority. However, Jesus says that there is no place for this in His church (v. 43). Not only did Jesus tells us this, but he lived the perfect example of serving others. Here was the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, who gave up his rights and sacrificed his life for us in the purest act of service. In receiving our salvation through Christ’s sacrifice, let us seek to serve those around us, sharing His love and His light into the world.
