Isaiah 40:3-5 A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
John references this passage from Isaiah when he describes his role as a prophet. Take a moment to imagine the scene – valleys being raised up, mountains being flattened. Entire landscapes changing and moving. If you live in a city, there’s probably nowhere near you that’s totally level like what’s being described here. Imagine every building, every tree, every wall knocked down. Absolutely nothing standing between you and the horizon, all around. This is Isaiah’s picture of how God’s glory is revealed. Everyone on the planet can see it, with no obstacles or obstructions getting in the way.
