Mark 8:27 – 30
27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?” 28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” 29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.” 30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
People continue to mis-identify Jesus in different ways. The Muslim will say he was simply a prophet, but not God as man. The Jew will say he was a political revolutionary, crucified for his insurrection against Rome. The agnostic will say he was a merely a moral teacher and the atheist will say he didn’t exist.
As we see in this passage, people have always had erroneous theories about who Jesus was. The world so desperately wants to allocate Jesus to a box that they can get behind, they strip him of the very thing he is, The Messiah. But as scripture tells us, this constant misidentification of Jesus by the world is what we should expect.
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. – 1 Corinthians 1:18
After asking his disciples, “Who do people say I am?”, he asks them the more important question of “Who do YOU say I am?”
So today, ask yourself, who do you say Jesus is? Is Jesus Lord? Is Jesus the Messiah? Is Jesus your Saviour? Our answer is vital for our eternal destiny.
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. – Romans 10:9
