Jesus is the humble Messiah who has the power to heal.
Luke 40-41
At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.
What a picture this passage brings us. This chapter has healings happening all throughout it. Can you imagine it? People coming to Jesus with sicknesses and demons and all that was needed was for him to hold out his hand to touch them and they were healed. Could you imagine this happening now? People would probably think it was some kind of magic or a trick. However, Jesus has bought about a far greater healing now; he has taken on our sin at the cross!
What I love the most in this passage is the humility that Jesus shows. When the demons that were coming out of people were shouting “you are the Son of God”, Jesus turns around and tells them to be quiet. Jesus shows his power and humility in this action. He shows that he has the power over these spirits, when they think they have the power, because they know who he is. Jesus shows his power as he rebukes them. He also shows us humility as he has the whole way through his life so far. I feel like this would be the time for him to say “yes, you got it right, I am the Son of God”, but Jesus knew it wasn’t the right time. He knew all along when the time would come for it to be revealed that he is the Son of God and this moment was not it. I’m thankful that Jesus was and still is the Messiah of the world and that he wasn’t impatient or power seeking. He followed God’s perfect timing and was revealed at the right time as the Messiah who would save our world.
Head: Do you believe Jesus is the Son of God and Messiah of the world?
Heart: When you see the humility Jesus has shown in this passage and many others in Luke how do you feel about Jesus? Do you see him as strong, loving and kind?
Hands: How can you show Jesus’ humility and love to those you come in contact with today?
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, we thank-you that you sent you son to be the Messiah of the world. Thank-you that he trusted completely in your timing and remained humble even in death. Thank-you that Jesus has been raised to life and is humbly reigning with you now. Please help us to display this humble love to others in our daily lives. In Jesus precious name we pray, Amen.
