Psalm 3

Lord, how many are my foes! How many rise up against me!
Many are saying of me, “God will not deliver him.”

But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
I call out to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy mountain.

I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me on every side.

Arise, Lord!  Deliver me, my God! Strike all my enemies on the jaw;
    break the teeth of the wicked.

From the Lord comes deliverance.  May your blessing be on your people.

King David provides us with a picture of the Lord Jesus in this Psalm.  Like Jesus he is rejected by those who should be loyal to him.  Similarly, he also shows great loyalty to the Lord in difficult circumstances. Just as our saviour faced death with confidence that he would rise, David can rest with confidence knowing he would wake under the care of God.  He also had every confidence that ultimately there would be complete victory over all his enemies.

While David had all those similarities to Jesus, there were also some marked contrasts.  Above all David, like us needed the benefit of the saving work of Jesus.

Today, as we gather as God’s people, live or online, we will be exploring this Psalm further to see how, like David, we can have supreme confidence in our saviour, no matter how difficult life becomes.

In preparation, think about how this Psalm might apply to your life now.
