Faith for Exiles
“Collectively, our society says that our choices define our identity… Contrary to the Creator’s intentions, human identity is under a full scale rebrand in digital Babylon. Personal screens reinforce the notion of elective identity by giving us daily, even hourly, chances to present a self-selected, carefully filtered, curated version of ourselves to friends and followers. Social media, for all its promises to connect people, also feeds our worst individualist, brand-making impulses by asking us to present our “personal brand guidelines” on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.” – Faith for Exiles p48
Later in this chapter, the authors explain “We find in Jesus the truest answer to who we are (children of God) and what we are meant to be (representatives of God’s glory).
Today think through how you use social media (or offline “personal branding” concepts like fashion, material possessions, brand names, or lifestyle choices). Are these contributing to building an identity in the world, or helping reinforce your identity in Jesus? Spend some time praying about this.
