Mark 16:8
8 Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.
They were going to mourn, to reflect and to see Jesus. The women were ready to see Jesus dead, resting in a tomb.
Trembling – shaking with fear; this seems like an appropriate response to discover two angels instead of Jesus’ body.
Bewildered – puzzled; the women did not see what they prepared their hearts or minds to do. Probably still grieving not seeing Jesus and being told he is alive would have been a shock.
Although they were very afraid, we can’t neglect that there was also hope. Afterall we learn in Luke (Luke 24:9) that they did share this news with the disciples. They were afraid, and in lots of shock no doubt, but they still did what was asked and proclaimed Jesus rising.
For us today, we hear this beautifully terrifying moment and are full of hope. We get to proclaim His rising.
For me making myself feel that grief, feel the shock of these happenings grows my faith. These are no longer just stories I have known since I was little and heard thousands of times but a history lesson on my salvation.
Over Easter let us reflect.
Don’t just remember these stories; read them and put yourself in these women’s shoes. Let every emotion that the women felt dwell in your heart. We are saved. Let us pray and proclaim salvation.
